Heartshakes
                Project

“Heartshakes”  as a project is multifaceted. It is a series of approaches that demands that my pedagogical, anatomical, and creative research not be considered separate. Allowing these different areas of my life and work to weave together, I offer audiences multiple ways to engage with the material

                         Performance

                         Movement Workshop

                         Meditation

I am committed to cultivating movement studies as an attentive practice of sensing the self, so that we may encounter one another.  I  am concerned with considering how bodymind/somatically informed practices complicate notions of body, health, and (de)colonization through exploring visceral anatomy, interoception, and naming the lineages of understanding that contribute to our perception.

I am partnering with Subcircle(Biddeford, Maine)to present Heartshakes, A Guided Tour. We are looking for additional partners for a NEST 3 Grant. If you are interested in learning more about Heartshakes Project, please contact me via the email you will find at the bottom of the page.

Heartshakes - A Guided Tour

This show runs approximately 1 hour and 15 min.

Exploring the relationships of erosion, deposition, and circulation alongside human togetherness, the company of 5 uses dance, storytelling, and puppetry to guide its audience on a slow walk through the woods. Each Guided Tour is specifically designed for audiences to experience the pace of arrival, play, and eventually departure of the site in which we are working.  Each location has a unique path and encounters with the puppets, dancers and impermanent structures. Yet the work is always carefully crafted with tour guides who bring the audience to specific sites in which they see different stages of the building up, or breaking apart. To enter, we have to be okay with leaving examines the ecology of grief, alongside the emergent vitality of decomposition. It is a journey through displacement and replacement for the performers and audience alike.

Heartshakes Workshops

Run Time: 3 hours

Gestures of the heart inspire this movement workshop. We will explore through movement, imagery, and map making, how the palm of the hand might reflect the surfaces surrounding the heart. Feeling for the poetics made visible to us through experiencing the part of ourselves we call heart, we can play, dance and follow paths as they emerge. Shannon is a level three Franklin Method Educator and incorporates that into the workshop. Expect functional anatomy, guided imagery, pulses, partnering, improvisational movement explorations, and circles containing reflections and conversations. Dance here is an expressive rhythmic exploration of the heart - all are welcome no matter your movement background. We will leave space and time for (re)orientation and discussion at the end of the session.

Extended Circulation Meditation

Run Time: 1.5 hours

This meditation explores the idea of extended circulation or the vascular system extending out into our external environment. It is an imagery journey in which participants can rest and or gently move their bodies as Shannon narrates. She starts by locating the heart and its anatomic circulatory patterns. She addresses the electromagnetic waves the heart emanates and employs the anatomy to have a poetic extension, allowing participants to imagine their own extended circulation. Enlivening portals, the heart waves allow us to travel into the earth, changing our pace to connect with the heartwaves that have come long before us. The time of soil and ancestors. The portals also open upwards exploring the cosmos. The time we haven't lived yet. Extending into space we mingle with the heart waves that have not yet pulsed. Using her deep study of Somatic Movement, Shannon uses Franklin Method, (the practice of imagery techniques, functional anatomic study, and movement explorations) and her study of Integrative Anatomy as inspiration for this practice.
